Jun Ji-hyun (born Wang Ji-hyeon 30 October 1981) is a South Korean actress and model.
Ji Hyun was born in Seoul, and studied in the Department of Theater and Film at Dongguk University. She began her career as a model in 1997, and after appearing in a number of TV sitcoms, her movie debut came in White Valentine (1999). This was followed by a role in Il Mare (2000), in which the handsomely shot scenes at Ganghwa proved to be one of several factors contributing to the success of the movie. Her biggest breakthrough was in My Sassy Girl (2001), a romantic comedy that won her the Best Actress award at the Daejong Film Festival in 2002. An American remake of Il Mare, The Lake House, was released June 14, 2006.
Since her debut as a model for Echo, Ji Hyun has modeled for many fashion companies and more recently, in advertisements for mobile phones and cosmetics. Some of her more popular product endorsements include Giordano, Laneige, and Samsung Anycall. In 2004, one of her Giordano adverts was considered too sexy by the censors and was banned from Korean TV. In the same year, she was voted as having the “Best Butt in Asia”, polling 41% of the total votes, beating Lee Hyo-ri, who only garnered 30% of the votes.
In 2005, she became the first Korean artist to feature on the cover for the famous fashion magazine ELLE.
The successful romantic comedy Windstruck (2004), co-starring Jang Hyuk, reunited her with the director of My Sassy Girl, Kwak Jae-yong.
